how . we . serve

Addressing the lonliness &  isolation of many residents in nursing homes is the purpose of the SCE.

In the early 1970's, Norma B. Elling, a member of the Presbyterian Church in Pluckemin, experienced through the prolonged illness of a family member, the loneliness and isolation of many residents in long-term care facilities. She conceived and designed the organization to bring spiritual help and community support to such persons. This not-for-profit organization was founded in 1975.

how we work.
SCE is locally based, autonomous, and ecumenical. It is governed by an all volunteer Board of Directors composed of both clergy and lay persons and has no affiliations.

To provide regular chaplaincy services to residents in all eldercare facilities in Somerset County not being serviced by another agency.
To support and enhance the role of those who care for the elderly.

The regular presence of a chaplain, one or more times a week, assures residents that they are not forgotten. Such continuity enables the chaplain to become someone the residents can depend on and turn to for support and comfort.
The services of a chaplain are provided in each of the listed facilities in Somerset County, serving more than a thousand persons for whom the facilities have become home.

The chaplain complements the efforts of local congregations by responding to unmet needs for worship, personal visits, counseling, and prayer.

"Even in old age they will still produce fruit; they will remain vital and green."  -Psalms 92:14 (NLT)

We are supported by contributions from area churches, long term care facilities, and tax deductible gifts from concerned individuals and organizations. We are an independent organization, not a part of any nursing home. We bring Christian guidance and ministry to many who are sick, alone or afraid. We need your support, plus that of your family, friends and home church to successfully continue this ministry.

"I shall pass through this world but once.

If therefore, there be any kindness I can show

Or any good thing I can do,

Let me do it now...

For I shall not pass this way again"
